Threat of Vision Loss for Children

According to the World Health Organization, measles is the leading cause of death among young children around the world.  What’s more, about two in every 1,000 children worldwide will die from the measles, according to the CDC.  Despite the current outbreak of measles in 17 states, there are some parents who still treat measles as just another harmless disease, like the chickenpox.

Unfortunately, these parents may be the first people to realize that the measles can have significant consequences for children.  In fact, measles carries a strong threat of vision loss, with many sufferers succumbing to permanent blindness after a bout with the measles.

The measles can cause significant irritation or clouding of the cornea; this can cause the cornea to inflame and eventually break down.  Some children might be left with scarring, which can impact healthy vision.  However, some measles sufferers will have their corneas completely break down, thus causing complete and irreversible blindness.

The problem is so severe that it’s estimated that the measles causes up to 60,000 cases of blindness around the world every year. A poor diet that’s lacking in vitamin A can exacerbate vision problems caused by measles; however, even the best diet won’t stop the measles from breaking down the cornea.

So how can you protect your child from getting serious eye complications from the measles? Simple: vaccinate.  The vast majority of people who get the measles weren’t vaccinated against it; therefore, if you want to protect yourself and your family, get vaccinated right away.  Parents should also ensure that their vaccinations are up-to-date.

To prevent eye complications from the measles, it’s important to schedule regular exams with your ophthalmologist. At the Center for Ophthalmology and Laser Surgery – serving the greater Fort Lauderdale, FL and surrounding Florida areas – Dr. Loeffler can help protect your child’s ocular health and give advice on how to prevent the measles in your family.  Schedule an appointment with Dr. Loeffler today to learn more about how the measles can affect your child’s vision.
