Age-related macular degeneration is one of the most common eye diseases for people 65 and older; in fact, it’s estimated that 11 million Americans currently suffer from AMD.  This disease causes the macula – the part of the eye responsible for helping us see small details – to become cloudy.  The macula is located in the back of the eye, and is sensitive to light.  When the macula becomes cloudy, the light can’t get through, which makes it difficult for sufferers to read, write, drive, and otherwise enjoy normal activities.

Most people who suffer from AMD will develop dry AMD, which is generally caused by aging.  Wet AMD, on the other hand, is caused by the development of abnormal blood vessels underneath the retina in the back of the eye; these blood vessels can leak and cause significant vision loss.  If left untreated, some sufferers may become permanently blind.

AMD can be spotted during regular eye examinations with an ophthalmologist.  While dry AMD can be treated, the development of wet AMD was usually untreatable – until 2006, at least.  That was the year new eye injections had been developed, which could help reverse vision loss caused by AMD.  These treatments, when done once per month, can help improve vision, thus allowing a patient to enjoy reading, writing, driving, and cooking again.

Wet AMD is a serious disease that needs to be caught right away in order to be treated.  This is why it’s critical for people 65 and older to remain vigilant about visiting the ophthalmologist. He or she can examine your eyes for signs of dry or wet AMD and develop the right treatment based on the examination.

In order to keep your vision healthy and strong, it’s important to schedule regular exams with your ophthalmologist. At the Center for Ophthalmology and Laser Surgery – serving the greater Fort Lauderdale, FL and surrounding Florida areas – Dr. Loeffler can help protect your ocular health against the development of age-related macular degeneration.  Schedule an appointment with Dr. Loeffler today to learn more about AMD and your treatment options.
